Qatar Airways Cargo Expansion in China Introducing Two New Destinations. In a strategic move to bolster its presence in the Chinese market, Qatar Airways Cargo, a leading air cargo carrier, is thrilled to announce the introduction of two new destinations: Chengdu (TFU) and Chongqing (CKG).

This expansion marks a significant milestone in Qatar Airways Cargo’s commitment to enhancing its global network and facilitating international trade between China and the rest of the world.

New Air Routes Commenced

Effective from September 23 and 25 respectively, Qatar Airways Cargo has initiated belly hold flights to Chengdu and Chongqing. These flights will operate three times a week and will be served by Airbus A330-300 aircraft, ensuring efficient and reliable cargo transportation.

Strengthening Connections

The addition of Chengdu and Chongqing to its list of destinations in Mainland China further strengthens Qatar Airways Cargo’s presence in the region. Qatar Airways Cargo has been serving the Chinese market since October 2003 when it initially introduced belly hold flights to Shanghai.

These new destinations offer customers direct belly hold capacity for their imports and exports, providing vital connectivity between China and the global market.

Elisabeth Oudkerk, SVP Cargo Sales and Network Planning, expressed her enthusiasm about this expansion. She stated, “We are pleased to expand our network in Mainland China with these new destinations and offer our customers direct belly hold capacity for their imports and exports out of these key markets.”

Existing and Newly Introduced Destinations

Qatar Airways Cargo already serves several destinations in Mainland China, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Zhengzhou, collectively offering a weekly cargo capacity of over 2,700 tonnes each way, including the newly introduced Chengdu and Chongqing.

Export and Import Focus

Both Chongqing and Chengdu stations will primarily focus on export-oriented markets, jointly providing a weekly capacity of 84 tonnes each way. Exports will mainly comprise vulnerable/tech cargo, while imports will encompass general cargo, fish, seafood, and perishables.

This expansion aligns perfectly with Qatar Airways Cargo’s ongoing commitment to expanding its global footprint and delivering dependable and efficient cargo solutions to its valued customers. This remarkable journey began in 1997 when Qatar Airways launched its cargo division, initially staffed by just five dedicated cargo professionals. At the outset, they capitalized on leased passenger planes to sell cargo space.

Since then, the airline has evolved significantly, growing from a single converted Airbus A300-600 freighter in 2003 to an impressive fleet of 31 freighter aircraft in 2023. Qatar Airways Cargo has held the coveted title of the world’s largest cargo carrier since 2019.

Qatar Airways Cargo’s expansion has been extraordinary. The airline initiated regular operations to key destinations like Amsterdam, Chennai, and New Delhi, and today, it serves more than 160 belly-hold destinations alongside over 70 freighter destinations.

The fleet consists of two Boeing 747-8 freighters, two Boeing 747-400 freighters, 26 Boeing 777 freighters, and one Airbus A310 freighter. In addition, they’ve established an extensive road feeder service (RFS) network, enhancing their connectivity and reach.
