The committee also sought reappointment to re-examine witnesses like Alan Joyce and Transport Minister Catherine King, who were unable to appear initially.

Specific suggestions in the report aim to diminish Qantas’ dominance. These include introducing automatic cash compensation for delayed or canceled flights, which has been a standard practice in Europe for nearly two decades. Additionally, the government is urged to respond to recommendations for improving Sydney Airport’s slot management system, a review that concluded almost three years ago.

Open Skies or Government-Controlled Approach

The committee could have proposed more audacious recommendations, such as unrestricted open skies agreements that Australia already has with certain countries, which would give airports control over landing slots. Alternatively, the government could retain the power to decide who lands but leverage it to secure desired outcomes like commitments on workers’ rights, similar to what the European Union achieved with Qatar.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese government plans to release a white paper on aviation policy up to 2050 after gathering feedback on a recently published green paper. The next three decades will bring significant changes to the aviation industry, including the emergence of ultra-long-haul flights connecting distant cities.
